Independent School Advising

Mission. Market. Alignment.

Independent schools are entering a different enrollment environment. Declining birth rates mean fewer school-age children, while rising tuition and economic uncertainty are making families increasingly deliberate about the value of private education. Schools are competing for a shrinking pool of prospective students—and families have more choices and higher expectations.

In this environment, excellent schools can no longer afford to understand only their mission. They also need to understand their market.

Lori Day Consulting advises independent schools on the intersection of mission, enrollment, parent demand, market positioning, admissions, and retention. The goal is not to change a school’s mission to chase enrollment. It is to help school leaders understand what prospective families are actually looking for, identify areas of alignment and misalignment, and make thoughtful decisions about program, admissions, communication, positioning, and strategy.

A Different View of the Independent School Market

Lori Day brings an unusual perspective to this work. Over more than four decades in education, her career has provided several distinct vantage points: teacher and school psychologist; admissions and financial aid director; Head of School; and, since 2011, independent educational consultant.

Those roles offer different kinds of information. Inside schools, Lori learned how educators think about children, programs, institutional priorities, and enrollment. As an independent consultant, she has heard what families say privately while deciding where—and whether—to enroll their children.

That last perspective can be particularly revealing. Parents do not always tell schools everything they tell an independent consultant. They may hesitate to ask questions they fear could sound critical, politically sensitive, overly demanding, or potentially harmful to their child’s admission prospects. As a result, there can be a significant difference between what schools hear from prospective families and what families actually discuss while making their decisions.

Lori helps schools understand that gap.

Areas of Advising

Enrollment and Market Strategy. Identifying changes in parent demand, competitive positioning, enrollment vulnerabilities, opportunities for differentiation, growth, and retention.

Mission–Market Alignment. Examining how the school’s mission, educational philosophy, and program correspond with what current and prospective families value.

Parent Demand and Decision-Making. Helping leadership understand the preferences, assumptions, concerns, and threshold factors influencing families’ school choices.

Parent Focus Groups and Enrollment Research. Conducting confidential parent focus groups and/or individual conversations that function as enrollment exit interviews—exploring why families left the school, or why admitted families chose another school. Parents often share candid feedback with an independent consultant that they may be reluctant to give directly to the school. These conversations can uncover patterns in program, culture, communication, value, or family experience that are especially useful in strategic planning, enrollment strategy, and retention work.

Admission Strategy and Process Review. Reviewing admission philosophy, messaging, processes, family experience, and the ways prospective families evaluate the school.

Competitive Landscape. Examining how families perceive the school relative to other independent and public-school options—not simply how schools perceive one another.

Program, Positioning, and Marketing. Identifying programs or practices that may represent genuine competitive strengths; identifying areas where parent expectations and school offerings may be misaligned; and helping schools communicate distinctive value to prospective families.

Neurodiversity and Admission. Helping schools think strategically about neurodivergent applicants, institutional capacity, admission practices, family expectations, and the relationship between neurodiversity and a school’s broader commitment to diversity.

Leadership and Board Conversations. Facilitating strategic discussions with heads, boards, enrollment teams, and admission offices about demographic change, market pressures, mission, differentiation, and long-term enrollment sustainability.

Let’s Talk

The coming years will present real enrollment challenges for independent schools. They will also create opportunities for schools that understand what makes them distinctive, know which families value those distinctions, and communicate that value clearly.

Mission defines who you are.
Market tells you who is looking for what you offer.
Alignment is where sustainable enrollment begins.
