I used to hear a lot about Captain Underpants during lunch in the schools where I worked. You learn a lot about the lives of your students at lunch table duty! But I have not read Captain Underpants myself in years, so I stopped by the Concord Bookshop the other day and picked up a copy of the first book in the series and sat down and read it. If I were in 3rd or 4th grade, especially if I were a boy, I would not be able to stop turning the pages. As a 47-year-old woman, I could not stop turning the pages! Read more…
Hi Lori, thanks for your perspective on the captain! Glad to hear that someone else sees it the same way. Over the summer my just turned 8 son, a reluctant reader, got his first capt underpants comic book. He’s been loving them! What little boy wouldn’t love the potty humor therein?
Last weekend we bought the next 3 editions, and he started reading them in the store then in the car then during dinner out (with perhaps a 20 minute break to eat) then after dinner ,and way past bedtime until I finally took it away at 9:55! Absolutely unbelievable, my kid read to himself for the better part of four hours! That is completely unprecedented, practically a miracle. I’m just so glad he’s reading that I don’t much care what it is, but they actually have some bigger words and kinda complex ideas.
Good article!
Hi Judy, thanks so much! Glad your son now has the reading bug!
